Speak with your child about his/her IEP
Self-advocacy is an invaluable skill. It is important so that your child understands his/her strengths and needs, knows his/her rights and responsibilities, and has a chance to participate in the decisions that are made about his/her education. Students who know how to advocate for themselves, and seek the accommodations they need are more likely to make successful transitions to life after high school. If your child is old enough, encourage your child to take on an active role in their education. Speak to him/her about his/her strengths and differences and how we all have differences and that it's okay! This video is about two supportive parents who not only advocated for their child, but taught her to self-advocate.
